Let’s Talk about Distracted Driving

By March 1, 2017Blog

Distracted driving is a problem which concerns all of us, no matter where we live. Every day, a person in Canada dies from distracted driving. In fact, more people die from distracted driving than impaired driving. Distracted driving happens when a driver takes their eyes off the road. This includes a number activities such as texting, eating, conversing with passengers, reaching for something under a seat, and even fixing hair and/or makeup. A study found that in 80% of collisions, the driver had looked away from the road for only three seconds prior to the crash.

Distracted driving can lead to:

  • Reduced reaction time
  • Impaired judgment
  • Possibly falling asleep behind the wheel

As vehicles become safer due to all the technology used to protect us, there may be the perception that we as drivers are also becoming safer. While technology such as Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay can make it easier to navigate the roads, it is still important to put your full attention on the road and be aware of the traffic ahead and around you.

What you can do:

  • Use hand-free devices such as Bluetooth, Apple CarPlayVW App Connect, or JLR InControl
  • Plan your route in advance
  • Put your cell phone away and out of reach
  • Turn down loud distracting music
